What is nail plate?

The nail plate, also known as the nail body, is the visible, hard part of the fingernail or toenail that covers the nail bed. It is made up of compacted layers of dead skin cells that contain the protein keratin. The nail plate is responsible for protecting the nail bed from harm and helping to grip and manipulate objects. It is usually smooth and slightly curved in shape and can vary in color depending on a person's genetics and overall health. Nails grow from the base of the nail plate, called the nail matrix, and can take up to six months to completely regenerate. Proper nail care, including regular trimming and moisturizing, can help keep the nail plate healthy and prevent common nail problems like brittleness, discoloration, and infection.
